What is a circular economy?

How does it work and why should we transition to this economic model?

In short, a circular economy is all about moving past the current take-make-waste approach to production and consumption and finding ways to maintain the value of products, materials and resources in the economy for as long as possible. It is founded on three principles: design pollution and waste out of the economy, keep products and materials in use and regenerate natural systems.

Why should we change the way we do business?

Because production and consumption patterns are the biggest driver of environmental impacts globally. A circular economy can help us meet humanity’s needs within the means of the planet. Did you know that is it estimated that two thirds of GHG emissions are released during the extraction, processing, and manufacturing of goods?
A circular economy can also help create jobs, spur innovation, increase efficiency and generate new revenue sources for small and medium enterprises, as well as large industries.

How can we achieve a circular economy?

Many people around the world are already participating in the circular economy by reducing, reusing, repairing, and sharing goods and services, but we need to do more. Everyone —individuals, businesses, and communities— can play a part in building a sustainable circular economy!
